SNEW Urges Customers To Be Wary of Threatened Utility Termination Scam
SOUTH NORWALK, Connecticut – August 7, 2013 - South Norwalk Electric and Water (SNEW) has recently received complaints from several customers indicating that they had been contacted by phone by individuals claiming to be from the utility; threatening shut-off of their service if they do not make immediate payment through a credit card, debit card or other electronic methodology.
SNEW does not terminate customers through cold calls and always sends multiple letters to customers prior to any termination of service for failure to pay. These letters provide customers with a phone number to contact SNEW’s Customer Service. SNEW’s customers should not make payments under any circumstances unless it is made directly to SNEW’s office in-person at One State Street in the South Norwalk Railroad Station or by check mailed to SNEW.
Customers who wish to verify the authenticity of any individual who contacts them either in person or through the phone claiming to be a SNEW representative should call the office at 203-866-3366 to verify the contact is legitimate.
Based on the information provided to SNEW it appears that the scammers have been contacting members of the Hispanic business community, however all customers should be cautious.
